FRANCISCO DE ASSIS (1181-1226) é uma das figuras históricas da cristandade mais amadas. Ele é lembrado como um homem cheio de compaixão que amava a natureza e os animais, além de amar a Verdade que ensina a respeitar não somente o próximo, mas todas as criaturas de Deus.

Assis era um místico, um monge medieval que passou sua vida como evangelista itinerante, pregando e ajudando os pobres na Itália. Sua simplicidade, devoção a Cristo e serviço aos pobres fez dele o único santo reconhecido por todos os cristãos e todas as igrejas, segundo Henry Gariepy.

Aos 25 anos, depois de uma vida indulgente como soldado, deu sua vida a Deus, voltou as costas para o luxo e passou a imitar a vida humilde de Cristo. Rejeitou sua herança e todas as ambições mundanas e pregou ao ar livre, juntamente com os seus seguidores. Continuamente cantava hinos de louvor para os pássaros, para os mendigos, para os leprosos e para os pobres.

Aproximando-se o fim de sua vida, tornou-se muito doente e sofreu a perda de sua visão. O hino "Vós, criaturas de Deus Pai", um dos hinos mais antigos de que se tem conhecimento, foi escrito por ele em 1225, durante um tempo de sofrimento físico, um ano antes de morrer.
